Speech Day & BTS 2016
Speech Day and Brooksian Talent Showcase
On 8 April 2016
Last Friday, we held our Speech Day and Brooksian Talent Showcase (BTS) at The Studio, Republic Polytechnic.
The Speech Day in the morning was an unforgettable event because it was the first time we held our Speech Day at an external venue. The Guest-of-Honour, N6 Cluster Superintendent, Mrs Esther Mok, was welcomed with much fanfare by a Japanese Drums item by five Secondary 1 students. Following that, students with outstanding achievements in academic and non-academic areas were recognised at the Prize-Giving ceremony. The highest accolades – Brooksian of the Year and Valedictorian were awarded to Darwin Azhar Bin Mohamed Azni and Ahmad Irfan Bin Ahmad Zaidi respectively. These two individuals exemplified fortitude and discipline in pursuing academic achievements, and passion and determination in their co-curricular activities, and yet were actively leading others and creating impact on the community. Besides student recognition, the staff were also recognised with long service awards in school and MOE, affirming them of their contributions to education. A concert was put up after the ceremony, bringing the celebratory event to a close and ending it on a high note. The guzheng ensemble and Modern Dance club put up a spectacular performance for the audience and a guest performance by the Brooksian of the Year and Valedictorian added a special touch to the concert this year, wowing the audience with their smooth vocals and sleek dance moves.
In the evening, the Brooksian Talent Showcase (BTS) began with much anticipation and excitement as the studio was packed to the brim. Performances from Concert Band, Drama Club, Guzheng Ensemble and Dance Explosion kept the audience comprising students, parents and staff highly entertained throughout. Not only that, the Concert Band and Guzheng ensemble collaborated and surprised the audience with a familiar Xinyao tune. Besides these items put up by the Performing Arts CCAs, there were performances that showcased other students with musical talents – two pianists who performed a piano duet by Dvorak, a pianist and a guitarist who performed Green Day’s 21 Guns with a parent. That performance was particularly memorable because the parent shared that it was his dream to perform with his daughter (who was playing the piano accompaniment) and he reminded everyone that it was important for parents to spend quality time with their children, doing things together and fostering a stronger bond. Additionally, there was a special performance put up by members of the Parents’ Support Group who belted out a popular current hit to the delight of the audience. The audience was captivated by the evening’s performances and it was no surprise that the BTS ended with a bang to a rapturous applause. It was truly a night to remember and all this was made possible because of the dedication of the staff and students involved.
What Brooksians Say about BTS 2016:
BTS was very memorable to me because having been in the Red Cross, I see what my friends in the Performing Arts CCAs can do, and what they’ve been training for. I get to see the difference between our CCAs and I truly enjoyed the performances.
The BTS was particularly memorable for us because we got to watch our classmates do what they love before they move on to the next chapter of their lives. In addition, we think that the performances by parents were very heart-warming as they took time off to support their children by participating in this event. Lastly, we liked the BTS because it was held outside of school and we got to wear our home clothes!
