Mathematics and Science Pursuit 2017

On 19 October 2017


On 16th and 17th October, two teams of Secondary 3 Express students participated in the Mathematics and Science Pursuit organised by Republic Polytechnic and Science Centre. There were 28 teams from schools in North and West zone that joined the competition this year. One of our Team won the 1st position in Riddle Challenge and Science Centre Gallery Trail as well as the Overall Champion for the competition. The students displayed great teamwork, problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills during this competition. Well done to all staff and students involved in this competition.

Media Computing Competition 2017

MEC_MingSeng.jpegThe Media Computing (MEC) Competition is an annual competition that is organised by the Computer Education (CE) Unit, Curriculum and Development Division. The objectives of the MEC Competition are to: - provide a platform to showcase students’ work - develop students’ interest in media design, and - hone students’ communication and presentation skills. All students taking the subject Computer Applications (CPA) in Singapore are required to submit their work for this competition. 

There are two categories:
  • Secondary 2 - Animation Category
  • Secondary 3 - Game Making Category 
The awards for each level (Secondary 2 / Secondary 3) are as follows: 
  • Bronze – 15 awards
  • Silver – 10 awards
  • *Gold/Platinum – 10 awards

The top 10 entries from each category will qualify for an oral presentation before a panel of judges to compete for one of the three Platinum Awards for each category. Seow Ming Seng from 3 Discipline has been awarded the GOLD AWARD for the Game Making Category

Yellowren Festival Canvas Painting Competition

Three teams of Secondary Three Art students participated in the Yellowren Festival Canvas Painting Competition at the Lower Seletar Reservoir Park. They worked in teams to create a canvas painting based on the theme “Love The World”. One of our team (Charmaine 3F, Hui Ru 3F, Astrid 3I, Christine 3I & Danial 3I) managed to clinch the 1st place out of 97 teams. Good effort by all students who participated in this.

2017 National Create Your Newspaper Competition

The CL unit sent 2 teams of students (1 from Upper Sec and 1 from Lower Sec) to participate in the 2017 National Create Your Newspaper Competition this June. The result was published in the Zaobao "COMMA"(早报《逗号》) on 10 August 2017. Our Upper Sec team won the Third Class award and the Lower Sec team was awarded the Second Class and Best Title award. This competition was organised by the Committee to promote CL learning (推广华文学习委员会),Zaobao "COMMA"(早报《逗号》) and Xinmin Sec Sch. More than 40 schools participated in this competition. The 2 teams attended a training workshop conducted by Xinmin Sec Sch on March and started working on their projects in April. The competition was held on June. Mdm Ma Ying, and the 2 teams of students spent many days working hard on their projects and conducting interviews. 

The themes were: 
 Upper Sec - 《回眸-那一年的花季》(Looking back- the year of blooming season) 
Lower Sec - 《一片痴谜动人心》(A touching heart) - Best Title

LKY Outstanding Normal Course Award: A true Brooksian Champion - Muhd Abdul Raziq

Soaring yet rooted. Our school motto succinctly captures the exemplary qualities of Raziq. On 17 August 2017, Raziq was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Award for Outstanding Normal Course Students (LKY-ONC Award) for being one of the top Normal (Technical) students based on his GCE ‘N’ level examination results. He continues to soar academically in ITE College Central with impressive grades. Even with his stellar academic achievements, he remains grounded in values that makes him a fine gentleman. As an alumnus to the Northbrooks Floorball team, he continues to contribute by mentoring his juniors when the opportunity arises. As the Vice-captain of the Floorball team at ITE Central College, he places the team above self; he chose to miss the prize presentation of his LKY-ONC Award in order to be present for his team’s competition. We are proud of you, Raziq!

National Chinese Language Story-telling Competition

On 27 May 2017, Aryan Ajay Deshpande from Sec 1G emerged as one of the top six finalists of the 10th National Story-telling Competition (Secondary school division) (10届中小学生《讲伟人故事》比赛)!  With his speech on our war-time hero, Mr Lim Bo Seng, Aryan clinched a Merit Award despite not being a native speaker of Mandarin.  His achievement is testament to Aryan’s hard work, and the effective guidance from his teachers.  Congratulations, Aryan! 

National Junior College Invitational Shoot

On 27 May 2017, Gan Tianrui came in top at the National Junior College Invitational Shoot 2017 (Men's C Division, 10m Air Rifle)! He faced stiff competition from the sharpest shooters in Singapore, including competitors from the Singapore Sports School. However, Tianrui maintained his composure, and came in champion in his category. You have done the Northbrooks family proud, Tianrui!

National Public Speaking Competition 2016

Student Teo Lian Mao (Sec 2 Fortitude) was placed 6th at the National Public Speaking Competition, the final round of which was held on 4 November.

International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) 2016

On 3 October 2016


A total of 136 Brooksians participated in the 2016 International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) for Mathematics.

The following results were obtained: 3 students obtained Distinction:

Another 29 students obtained Credit and 6 others obtained Merit.

 

Inaugural Republic Polytechnic-Hospitality Race 2016

Three of our Secondary Three students took part in the inaugural Hospitality Race organised by Republic Polytechnic held on 8 September 2016.
 
 
The race consists of interesting hospitality and tourism-related challenges for secondary students to gain an appreciation of the business operations of the hospitality and tourism industry. 
 
After an intense 3-hour race of completing various challenges, our students, Yeoh Lui Chen Xing (3I), Suazo Dhae (3I) and Vicky Lui (3F), led by one of the RP student leaders, Tabitha Chee Shuang Er who graduated from our school last year, emerged 1st Runner-up, among 20 teams from nine other schools. 

National Create Your Newspaper Competition 2016

The CL unit sent 2 teams of students (1 from Upper Sec and 1 from Lower Sec) to participate in the 2016 National Create Your Newspaper Competition this June. Today the result was published in the Zaobao "COMMA"(早报《逗号 Page 9. Our Upper Sec team won theSecond Class and Best Title award and the Lower Sec team was awarded the  First Class Award.
 
This competition was organised by the Committee to promote CL learning (推广华文学习委员会Zaobao "COMMA"(早报《逗号 and Xinmin Sec Sch. More than 40 schools participated in this competition.
 
The 2 teams attended a training workshop conducted by Xinmin Sec Sch on 12 March and started working on their projects in April. The competition was held on 23 June. Mdm Ma Ying, assisted by Ms Lin Lin and Mr Huang KH, and the 2 teams of students spent many days (including weekends) working hard on their projects and conducting interviews. The themes were (refer to attachments):
 
 
All articles from the Gold award and the First class award will be published in "COMMA" from next week onward.

All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition for Normal Course Students 2016

Congratulation to Zhang Hai En (Sec 4D1) for his achievement in the All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition for Normal Course Students 2016. Hai En was placed 10th in the individual Upper Sec NT category.


 National Literature Festival (16th July) - Upper Sec Debate win!

4 Upper Secondary Literature students won a set text debate at the National Literature Festival on 16th July! They only had 1 trial debate in class and had done the rest of their rehearsals / research on their own. They have truly shown themselves as Brooksian Champions who take charge of their own learning through this event. 

Zoombara 2016 (MTL Dept - Malay Language Unit)

On Saturday, 13 February 2016, 4 Malay Language students represented the school in Zoombara 2016, an inter-school competition organised by the National Institute of Education (NIE). More than 10 schools participated in this competition. The objective of the competition was to nurture students to become concerned citizens and active contributors to society by raising their awareness of the importance of maintaining and fostering moral values for the benefit of society in future.
